A RUSSIAN SILVER GILT ON SILVER OKLAD MOUNTED ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS OF MYRA, MAKER'S AND ASSAYER'S STAMPS, CITY OF KAZAN, 1837, of rectangular form and enclosing a complete polychrome painted three-quarter image of St. Nicholas having white hair and beard with a mournful expression above nicely detailed ecclesiastical robes, with right hand in a blessing and the other holding a large Bible, crowned by a circular halo and star flanked by Christ and Mary beneath a heavy repouss silver oklad enclosing chased and engraved details centering an applied silver-gilt halo of the saint, stamped on bottom edge with the city of Kazan hallmark, 84, unidentified assayer's Cyrillic initials VP over 1837, maker's Cyrillic initials JU.
