A PAIR OF HEREND PARCEL GILT AND POLYCHROME PAINTED TWO-HANDLED VASES AND COVERS, ROTHSCHILD BIRD PATTERN, CIRCA 1949, of shaped baluster form and centering sides enameled with various species of birds amongst stylized flowering trees and scattered butterflies with insects flanked by scrolling foliate molded handles surmounted by a domed lid enclosing a beaded bud finial, raised on an incorporated circular socle and base, reversing to an underside with overglaze maker's marks and numbers.Provenance: Galerie BarbizonNote: These urns are of hand made, hand painted, Herend porcelain from Hungary. Their elegant style and fine quality combine to make an unforgettable presence.The Herend trademark is on the bottom with the shield in blue. The stylistic letters "H" with "P" centered represents the finest in quality porcelains. The trademark reads Herend Hungary, hand painted 6490/RD. The number on both urns is the same and design registration marks are abbreviated as "RD". The Hungarian Legend of the Rothschild Bird - in the 19th century, the Baroness Rothschild lost her pearl necklace in the garden of their Vienna residence. Several days later it was found by her gardener, who saw birds playing with it amongst the branches of a tree, hence the pearl necklace in the trees of the Rothschild Bird pattern.
