18th Century French FirebackAn 18th C., Louis XV Fireback _ Good Antique Condition _ Rusting to Iron in Areas Commensurate with Age _ Mid to Late 1700ÍsThis magnificent 18th C. French fireback has an interior scene of two Roman women and a man in a room with stone walls conversing in front a fireplace to the left. The man has a stylized animal at his feet. The scene is surrounded with ornamental motifs of elongated c- and s-scroll stylized acanthus leaves with trailing vines.Originally, iron firebacks were used to reflect heat into the room from the fire. They were placed on the floor of the back firewall at an angle. Today, they are still used in this manner as well as being mounted as pure ornamentation on garden walls, interior walls and at the back wall of cook tops.H=30 _, W=31 7/8
