18th. century ivory carving of Boddhisattva

Lot Passed

Description: 18th. century ivory carving of Guan Yin (Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara, holding shell in left hand and ambrosia container in the right hand. This representation of Guan Yin is extremely rare and the first one I have ever seen and is probably of Tibetan origin. Instead of being represented as a young and beautiful woman, Guan Yin appears as a demonic seated bearded male. The headdress as well as the beard is constituted from carved ling zhi. Age lines and beautiful yellow toning is present. An age fissure appears on the left sleeve, possible an old repair. Size: 5" X 3" (12.5 X 7.5 cm.).
Condition: Age fissure on left sleeve.
Year: 18th. century
Country: China
Materials: Ivory
