Unusual extra long and large beautifully carved walnut inlaid with satinwood design on the lid of this wonderful 18th century knife box from England. Small inlay of ebony and satinwood along the exterior lines of the box. Three different widths in the design from front to back to break the bulkiness of the length. As this piece is extremely aged,C.1765-70, was crafted with three wood blocks or feet on the bottom front so that only the bottom edge of the front and back touch the sideboard on which it would rest,a natural leveling system for the uneven planed boards of a sideboard used in this era. Ebony diamond shaped inlay on the interior lid and original paper lining with the interior space open to hold new treasures or fill with crystal decanters for a fabulous tantalus.A knife shield insert could be added if desired. Two bronze escutcheons, one with black and white tassel, lock,no key and hinges which have been replaced many years prior as the original would have worn thin with constant use. Fabulous condition for the age, rich hand rubbed patina with only a couple of minor joint separations or cracks and tiny nicks to the wood along the bottom inlay. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Measures 13.75D (15D with tassel)8L X 14.25H.
