Large antique Chiurazzi bronze figure of Narcissus after the antique, c. 1899 Italy. Bronze figure mounted on a circular bronze base inscribed: “Chiurazzi Napoli”. The original Roman sculpture was discovered in a Pompeian house in 1862 and currently resides in the Museo Nazionale.
Size: H. 24" Base: D. 10" Weight: 24lbs 6oz Condition: Very good, dark patina from age, structurally excellent with no damage or repairs. ************************************************************* The sculpture is regarded as the last of the great sculptures of antiquity to be discovered. Bronzes such as this were widely copied in Naples by various foundries. This bronze is listed as No. 1 in the Neapolitan foundry of J. Chiurazzi & Fils catalogue of 1900. The firm of Chiurazzi cast numerous copies of antiquities from Herculaneum and Pompeii. In 2006 Christies of London auctioned a copy for US$2,442 and later that year another copy for US$3,546.
