O/C - Paul Lelong, Still Life, 1820 French School - a small format oil on canvas painting by Paul LeLong, a French painter who was active 1799-1846. This painting is estimated to have been completed in 1820.
Size: H: 8", W: 10" Weight: 1 pound Condition - very good, in older frame - possibly original Lelong specialized in still-life painting in water media on an intimate scale. His cabinet-sized paintings are generally horizontal in format, and display items along a bare stone tabletop. Frequently the array of objects refers to specific themes such as the senses or the seasons. As such, Lelong often conceived of his small pictures in suites of two, four, or six paintings. The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England (Broughton bequest) possesses six still lifes by Lelong similar to the present pair, all of which contain a bouquet of flowers. Gouache: the name of which derives from the Italian guazzo, water paint, splash or bodycolor (the term preferred by art historians) is a type of paint consisting of pigment suspended in water. A binding agent, usually gum arabic, is also present, just as in watercolor. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities. Condition reportvery good, in older frame - possibly original
