Student lamp with sliding height adjustment made by the Manhattan Brass Co., marked on the chimney holder. Also marked with patent dates of 1876, 77 and 79. Business was begun in 1865 in New York City and was the only manufacturing facility, prior to 1900, that was not tied to the brass sheet producers of the Naugatuck Valley in Connecticut. Numerous patents were granted to the company between 1876 and 1910. Pick style wick is present. Silver plated brass, encased over cast iron body. Original shade is milk glass, chimney is a reproductions as expected. Not electrified.
