*************************************************************
Senator Walter Ernest Tips - In the period when the Texas of today was still an unrealized dream and hope of the future, Senator Walter Ernest Tips rose to prominence in the life of the State, and by the actual worth of his accomplishments contributed much to its progress. He became the greatest wholesale and retail merchant in Texas, a builder of vast civic enterprises and a leader in all projects for the benefit of his city and State and this great period of development. He won the admiration and respect of all, and his name today is assured a lasting remembrance in the ranks of those who may truthfully be called builders of the Texas empire. Senator Tips was born at Elberfeld on the Rhine in Germany, on July 23, 1841, a son of Conrad and Caroline (Braun) Tips. His father was a man of prominence in Elberfeld, serving as city secretary and taking an active part in city and governmental affairs. Because of the restrictions of the German Government and the strife which they engendered, he came to America with his family soon after the Revolution of 1848, settling at Seguin, Texas, where he died.
Walter Ernest Tips received his educational training in the public schools. After his father's death, he was able to attend school only a little, but he was an insatiable student, and in the evenings, or in his hours of leisure, carried on his reading and studies. He mastered the various aspects of human knowledge and became familiar with the best literature of the world. In addition, from the earliest years, he proved himself a talented musician, and as a boy would practice nights in the back of the little store where he worked, learning to play upon the violin and later upon the cello, which was his favorite instrument. Senator Tips began his amaxing business career at New Braunfels, where he established a general mercantile business with two partners. Later he came to Austin, Texas, and purchased his brother's business. in this city, his earlier partners still being interested with him in this venture. Senator Tips immediately converted the store into a general hardware enterprise, and within a few years became the sole owner of the business. Under his able guidance the volume of its trade steadily increased, and Senator Tips soon became known as a foremost man of buisness in the State. With his vast powers of intellect and his knowledge of the lessons which history alone can teach, he also became a leader in every phase of State affairs, not only commercial, but educational, civic and social.
He was a veteran of the Civil War and when the war ended he was a Lieutenant of artillery. He later served as State Senator in the later 1890s.
