Winchester, Model 1886, SN 62732, .38-56 caliber rifle. All original. A silver plaque is attached with copper tacks and engraved with the following: 'Presented to Ch. High Bear-Sioux, Indian Congress, Omaha, Neb., 1898.' Another silver plaque engraved with simple decoration and further tack decoration.
High Bear history, documents and images as follows: a Sioux Chief and a member of the Standing Rock Delegation to Washington, DC. in 1888. Native American, Indian, 19th c. Accompanying this lot is a letter from the Winchester Firearms of Cody, Wyoming, dated May 25, 2010 and signed by Jessica A. Bennett, Records Specialist for Cody describing this rifle; a copy of a photograph taken 1894 in Brooklyn, NY, 'Buffalo Bill attends wedding of High Bear and Holy Blanket'; copy of a N.Y. Herald June 1, 1894 article entitled, 'High Bear Takes a Bride'--describing their wedding ceremony, which took place in New York; copy of an 1888 photo of a group of 13 American Indians, representing the Standing Rock Delegation to Washington, D.C. and identified as High Bear, Thunder Hawk, Bear's Rib, Hairy Chin, Walking Eagle, Gray Eagle, Big Head, Gall, John Grass and Fire Heart; A color copy of an E. A. Rhinehart depiction of High Bear; A N. Y. Times 1882 article entitled 'Red Cloud's Threats and Subsequent Arrest', and cites High Bear as one of the involved chiefs; an 1872 N. Y. Herald article, 'Bill of Fare of Red Cloud's Company in New York', which describes the "savages" being brought to the Grand Central Hotel on Broadway in NY where they dined under the scrutiny, and criticism, of the reporter; copy of a 10-10-1888 article entitled 'Heap Big Injuns' and describes the another encounter with the party, which was on its way to Washington to confer with the Committee on Indian Affairs relative to the opening of the reservation;a copy of an 1894 article, 'Sorrowful Indians Back From Antwerp', describes the death of a woman who birthed a baby on the Red Star Line Steamer Ship and her body was buried at sea, much against Indian custom and ekpt from the Indians on board for fear of reprisals; a copy of 'Buffalo Bill's Wild West . . . . Hundreds of Spectators Watched the Arrival of Indians & Cowboys Yesterday' , referring to their arrival in Baltimore. Provenance: Miki and James J.
