Caravaca Cross,Spanish Main 18thC Soldiers, Brass

Sign In to see what this sold for

Spanish Main 18th C Brass Caravaca Soldiers Cross. This cross is a scarce piece of Spanish Main history, dating to the early to mid-18th Century. From it's good condition it was excavated on land rather than shipwreck (where they are usually found). It has been cleaned. The Caravaca Cross shows a Corpus on a Patriarchal Cross, often flanked by two angels. The upper of the two bars on the Patriarchal Cross normally represents a titulus; The Caravaca Cross is unusual in that the arms of the corpus are nailed to the upper bar. A portrait of Mary floats above skull and crossed bones. Cast in two pieces it is joined by discreet soldering.
Size: 5" x 2.25" x 0.125"
Weight: 3oz
Condition: Excellent, cleaned, encrustation remains in the deeper areas.
