Naval cutlass with the original bone handle deeply engraved 'Capt. Jno. Barry, Continental Ship Alliance, 32 G.(guns). Single edged blade has two deeply cut fullers running 2/3 the length, a shell integrated into the guard. Best guess is this handle carving is Centennial. A note attached states that this sword was found in a marine junk shop in 1951 at St. George, Staten Island. Blacksmith made in the 18th century.

Blade end peened over grip is original, no work has been performed to this sword. John Barry ( 1745-1803) has been referred to by many as the Father of the American Navy. His biography is well documented in an on line account written by his descendant John Barry Kelley. "Alliance" (1778-1785) was given to Barry's command in 1780 and was hailed as the favorite ship of the Navy and the Nation. Label attached states that it was originally brought to light in 1951 and was found on St. George, Staten Island. A letter accompanies this lot.
