Ship Bell & Logbook for Schooner 'Mindanao'

Ship's Bell (w/clacker) & Log book from the 4-masted Schooner, 'Mindanao', built 1902 in Aberdeen, Washington and originally named the 'Andy Mahony'. The 'Andy Mahony' - A four-masted schooner of 566 tons and 750 M capacity, was built at Aberdeen by John Lindstrom in 1902 for Olson & Mahony, San Francisco. In 1918 she was bought by Atkins & Kroll, copra importers, and was named the 'Mindanao' from 1918 until 1927. ' 'Mindanao', named after the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines. Her last deep-water voyage ended at San Francisco from Rotuma in November, 1926. in July, 1927, she was towed to Los Angeles to serve henceforth as a fishing barge. Recently she has been employed in that capacity off Newport Beach, under the name California. John Lyman, Pacific Coast Built Sailers, 1850-1905, The Marine Digest. February 15, 1941.
Hand inscribed inside of the bell in ink: 'Bell to a 4-masted schooner, Built 1902 in Aberdeen, Wash. - Andy Mahony' for John Lindstrom. Name changed to 'Mindanao'. Sunk by Harbormaster off Newport, Calif., Autumn, 1946.'The log book for the 'Mindanao' was manufactured by Max Kuner Company 'Nautical Opticians, Agents U.S. Government and British Admiralty's Charts, Books & Almanacs', 804 First Avenue, Seattle. Partial label on front retains the name 'Master Thompson' and part of the name 'Mindanao'. Every page include all details for trips from Seattle to Honolulu and return. Log Book Condition: a good portion of the original boards covering has been lost. Loose boards & spine pulled away from boards. Staining and chipping on edges of most pages, but all readable.

Condition of Bell: some pitting, works, original ship name ground off, probably when name changed from 'Andy Mahony' to 'Mindanao' in 1918.
