Tintype-3 Civil War Officers, Original Frame. Very well done tintype of three officers posing for the camera in uniform. Hand painted details especially to gilded buttons and insignia. Image is framed in a period bezel and mounted in a mahogany veneered frame.
Provenance: Miki and James J. Mangan III of Fairfield, CT Photo: H. 6" x L. 5.25" Frame Size: H. 7.5" x L. 6.75" x D. 75" Weight: 8oz Condition: Very good, image is strong with some crazing. ********************************************************** While most early photo processes involved paper or light metal plates, tintypes (aka ferrotypes) used a sheet of thin iron. Patented in 1856, tintypes are recognizable by their yellowish color and small sizes. The smallest plates are called gem tintypes, and are common in lockets or jewelry. Like daguerreotypes, they tend to tarnish easily. This medium was popular for many years, due to its higher developing speed and easy-to-clip material, making it ideal for framing.
