Sepik River Carved Wooden Bird-Man Figure. From the base the tall male figure is actually two figures, one morphing into the next as the protruding tongue of the bottom piece becomes the penis of the man above. A bird of paradise, Papua New Guinea's national symbol, sits atop his head. Cowrie shells serve as the eyes of the bird while a different type of shell portray the man' eyes. Probably a War Canoe Prow. Original paint, circa 1900.
