Haitian Wood Sculpture of Mermaid by Nacius Joseph. Nacius Joseph was born in Petit Goave, Haiti in 1939. He began his artistic career working along side of Odilon Duperrier in Port-Au-Prince. Pierre Monosiet discovered his woodwork sculpting skills. He was Haiti's first recognized wood sculptor. Profoundly involved in voodoo, Nacius draws his subject matter from his religious beliefs. In his book "Where Art is Joy", Seldon Rodman referred to Joseph as the "Sculptor of Genius". He has exhibited in atelier Jean Rene Jerome and has gained considerable recognition since his exhibition at the Brooklyn museum in 1978 and the Davenport Art Museum in 198. His work is among the premier selections of the permanent collection of Haitian Art displayed at the Davenport Art Gallery in Iowa. Illustrations can be seen in Seldon Rodman's book "Where Art is Joy".
