Vintage Dogon People Granary Door, Mali Africa

Sign In to see what this sold for

Vintage African tribe Dogon Granary Door collected in the late 1970's in Africa with proper patina on the wood, proper conservation and minor separation caused by wood shrinkage as expected from older pieces as caused by aging. Ancestral protective spirit figures of human, animals, or of symbolic motifs were carved relief onto the surface of the doors. Doors have pointed corners that served as a hinge as well as a sculpted wood lock to keep it closed. Dogon carvings of humans refer to the primordial ancestors known as Nommo who brought humankind to earth and who were the first farmers and blacksmiths. Made of heavy dense hardwood.
