Cartridge Box, Anson Mills, 1881 era US Army, Leather - Indian or Spanish-American War period, designed by Major Anson Mills. Thick polished dark brown leather with brass closure on top. Belt loop attachment pieces on rear. Interior is canvas, with slots for 10 cartridges per side, and a brass I.D. plaque that reads "Anson Mills, Pat. Dec 28 80"
Provenance: Miki and James J. Mangan III of Fairfield, CT
Size: L. 6.5" x W. 4.25" x H. 1.5"
Weight: 9.2oz
Condition: Very good cosmetic condition. One belt loop attachment has become unstitched. Brass fastener is intact and working well. Overall very clean and unworn.************************************** Anson Mills got his idea for the famous "Mills belt" while on campaign and soldiers having trouble with metallic cartridges rattling around in the Civil War era metal lined cartridge pouches. It was only after designing it that one of his officers under him decided to solicit a patent on his behalf which later made Mills wealthy.
