Combination Matchlock and Wheelock Musket with Brass & Bone Inlays, Circa 1600. Profusely inlaid with brass wire and pins in a scroll pattern. Escutcheons of brass are charged with heraldic images of winged lions swallowing a lindworm, eagle with arrow tongue and other motifs. Panels are string banded in bone. A tapering barrel of steel progresses from octagonal to round towards the muzzle terminating in a turned bolster. It is chiseled with decorations of horned trees apexed by concentric circles. Cartouches of L and P with a crown and anchor denote the maker and possible use in sea service. The substantial, tapering octagonal sight is affixed to the barrel top. Smooth 18 bore.
Size: Overall length 62.75" barrel length 47.5" Weight: 14.65 pounds Condition: Very good noting approximately 2" brass wire and 3 or 4 brass pins missing, age crack in butt(very secure), approximately 1/8 x 2" piece under lock mechanism missing, other minor age checks and wear.
