Basket-Lidded, Native American Inuit, Seal Gut Decoration, early 20th C. Woven basket with lid decorated with red & black seal gut patterns.
Provenance: Miki and James J. Mangan III of Fairfield, CT Size: H. 11.5" x L. 10" x W. 10" Weight: 8oz Condition: Very good, with only minor deterioration to the seal gut decorative elements. Basket and lid exhibit strong structural integrity. Coiled grass basket weaving is a traditional Inuit practice across the Arctic. Dried grasses from the Arctic tundra had many uses, since dried grass repels water and can act as an insulator. Evidence of prehistoric coiled baskets has been found throughout the Arctic. Stitches are started at the bottom of the basket, where they begin to coil around until the basket is completed. Designs can be stitched onto the basket using material like de-haired sealskin, or woven into the basket itself using colored wax-lined cord. These baskets are very time consuming and difficult to make; it is not unusual for a larger basket to take over a month to complete Condition reportVery good, with only minor deterioration to the seal gut decorative elements. Basket and lid exhibit strong structural integrity.
