Description
Early 19th Century 1820 Alphabet Verse House Sampler. The colorful silk embroidered sampler on a woven linen ground has three different styles of alphabet embroidery. The inscription reads When wealth to virtuous hands is given it blesses" likes the dews of heaven. Like heaven it hears the orphans cries and wipes the tears from widows eyes. Signed in blue silk embroidery "Ann Ginger Finishd the above work Dec THE 13 in 1820 A. aged 7 Y. years.". Sampler has a decorative vine" border with strawberries and a house with fruit trees and birds. In good condition with a bit of darkening from the wood burn on the frame edge. Stretched on wooden frame and backed with paper. It is not glued down, but instead tacked on the edge with period upholstery tacks. Framed in a modern maple period style frame. Measures 13 ¾" high x 13 1/3" wide. Frame measures 16 ¼" x 15 ¾".
