Early 19th Century "Whitework" Trapunto Quilt with Provenance. The finely quilted stuffed trapunto work quilt dating from circa 1810 to 1840 is entirely handmade. The central medallion format has an intricately quilted and trapunto pattern featuring a central basket or vase filled with flowers set within a frame of garlands on a field of diamond grid quilting. A further border features garlands marked by additional flower motifs. The center medallion has a mirror image double floral basket with vining border. The general composition and repertoire of motifs is common to both French (Provencal) and American needlework practiced between 1780 and 1850. Family history passed down with the quilt gave a connection to Thomas Jefferson.
Between 1996 and 1998, a wealth of research was conducted by staff members at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, Virginia to determine if the quilt was brought back from France by Thomas Jefferson in the late 18th century. Included with the quilt is packet of letters in a large Monticello envelope with considerable correspondence, photos and information from various research assistants and staff members at Monticello. Based on the wealth of research, a definitive decision as to the origin of the quilt was never made. The all white quilt is in good overall condition with a miniscule stitched mend close to one of the edges and some scattered light discoloration and pinpoint browning from age. A grey 30" x 25" acid free archival textile storage box and tissue are included with the quilt. Measures 91" long x 79" wide.
