Signed J.M.W. Turner 1837 (London, England 1775-1851) O/C Luminous painting entitled "Chichester Canal" - signed and dated bottom left corner - also inscribed on reverse "Property of John Ruskin painted by J.M.W. Turner 1837" (note below this inscription marked 1853 in black ink - unsure what this refers to, but possibly this is when Ruskin wrote this note and acquired the painting) - also, old paper label attached to stretcher inscribed "Chichester Canal painted J.M.W Turner R.A. This is considered to be the small picture painted by Turner before he painted the large painting of his which is slightly different in composition - Yours 1884 Capt. Harrity." Stretcher also marked in white pen "12.C" - Canvas stamped London - 20" x 24.5" - Original gold leaf frame - "T" tear in canvas 3" x 1.5". While this painting has NOT been authenticated, there is good evidence that this was done by the hand of Turner. J.M.W Turner was a frequent guest at the Earl of Egremont's estate prior to 1838 where he painted and sketched more than 1 view of the Chichester Canal - it is believed Turner last stayed at the Earl of Egremont's estate in 1837 (the date of this painting), so perhaps this a later version/study from those done in prior years. Also note, that frame and canvas are from the 1830-50 period. History indicates that Ruskin and his father owned more than 3000 works by Turner and when he died in 1851 Ruskin was an administrator of the estate - therefore the Ruskin date of 1853 makes sense as a reasonable acquisition time frame. Also Ruskin supposedly sold off a number of his Turner's in the 1880's making the note by Capt. Harrity in 1884 a reasonable time period for him to have acquired it and assume 2nd ownership of the painting.
