Title: Original cattle brand on rawhide with registration label signed by County Recorder
Author: ** Description: The brand is horizontal bar with two vertical bars, measuring 8.5x14 cm. (3½x5½"), with a printed tag filled out in ink: "Rev. R. McCulloch Mark and Brand. Filed for Record and Recorded Oct. 4, A.D., 1879. S.M. Coolly(?), County Recorder."Rare original brand record. The Rev. R. McCulloch appears in J.P. Munro-Fraser's History of Marin County, California, p.409, as assisting in the founding of the First Presbyterian Church of Tomales. Brand registrations such as this are described in the 1866 California law, "An Act concerning marks and brands in the county of Siskiyou":..."Every person being the owner of horses, mules, cattle... shall record with the recorder of said county his mark, brand, and counterbrand, by delivering to said recorder his mark cut upon a piece of leather, and his brand and counterbrand burnt upon it..."
