First Edition.Original printing of a rare San Francisco imprint by a British-born political reformer who published an anti-slavery newspaper in Ohio and Indiana, was a Secret Service agent during the Civil War and then moved to California to join a Utopian community in Riverside. In 1877, Cridge finally settled in San Francisco where he spent the rest of his life as an “agitation committee of one”, crusading for the economic views of Henry George, helping to form the Union Labor Party and to write a new San Francisco City Charter. His scarce publications included a Utopian novel (“History of an Extinct Planet”) and pamphlets arguing for proportional representation, and for the Progressive causes of initiative and referendum.
