Description: [2], xiv, 264 pp. Illustrated with 2 chromolithograph views after W.H. Holmes, 4 heliotype plates after photographs, and 36 other plates including a color double-page map, many other double-page charts, and views after Thomas Moran and H.H. Nichols. Text volume only, atlas volume not present. (4to) period half red morocco and boards, spine lettered in gilt, (series title on spine reads "U. S. Explorations West of the Mississippi"), marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. First Edition.Illustrated text volume from probably the greatest of all Grand Canyon books; noteworthy for the artwork of Holmes and Moran as well as the striking heliotype plates, an early use of photography in a government geological survey. Ex libris Northern Pacific Railway Co. Library with their small ink stamp to verso of front free endpaper and title page, bound for company president Henry Villard (1835-1900) with his name in gilt at spine foot. Villard was a major figure in the transportation industry in the West. He was president of Northern Pacific from 1880-1884 and served on the Board of Directors 1887-93.

Scuffing to spine and corner with some skinning to leather surface, corners worn with boards exposed at tips; small library stamps as noted; lacking atlas volume; else very good.
