Title: Broadside advertisement for the Pioneer Steam Candy Factory and Bakery in Honolulu, manufacturers of Pure Ice Creams and other delicacies
Author: ** Description: Printed on recto only. 29x13.5 cm. (11½x5¼").Rare broadside advertisement for the confectionary established by F. Horn in 1863, and apparently still run by him as a one-man operation, allowing him to keep his costs down. In fact, the advertisement is largely concerned with how Horn is able to offer "Pure Ice Creams! at so low a figure, as to be henceforth in the reach of People of limited means." As such, it offers some insight into the economics of Hawaii as opposed to the mainland, stating that "Pure Cream & Pure Richest Milk are Sold in Honolulu, at as low a price as Abroad... I pay for Refined Sugar less that what it is sold for in San Francisco or the Eastern States. The General Stagnation from which all business here are suffering at present has induced me to sell my home-made French Candies! of all descriptions at 30 cts. per Whole Pound." The price for the ice cream is $2 per Single Gallon, "And at the Same Time I will offer One Hundred Dollars Reward to anybody who can prove that my productions are not Strictly Pure and free from Adulteration..." Heading: (Hawaii)Place Published: Honolulu Publisher: Date Published: c.1890 Condition reportA little wear at left edge with small chip affecting a letter or two; very good.
