First Edition.Original printing of an historically significant speech by Samuel Gridley Howe, physician, anti-slavery crusader and husband of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” author Julia Ward Howe. Before the Civil War, Dr. Howe was founder and first Director of the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind. But in this startling post-war speech, he warned against segregating people with disabilities in such Institutions: "We should be cautious about establishing artificial communities for those who have natural infirmity…" they should be kept diffused among sound and normal persons.
