Title: Two Congressional documents transmitting reports by F.W. Lander on western roads and railroads, both in Wagner-Camp
Author: Lander, Frederick W. Description: Includes: Practicability of Railroads Through the South Pass. 20 pp. 1858. * Additional Estimate for Fort Kearney, South Pass, and Honey Lake Wagon Road. 27 pp. 1861. Together, 2 volumes. 1st removed from larger volume, 2nd stitched.Two significant documents relating to transcontinental communication - in the first Lander recommends that "in order to speed the establishment of rail transportation... the section from Fort Laramie to South Pass be constructed on timber piling, using wooden trails as a temporary facility until the track could be properly graded." In the second, Lander defends his "Fort Kearney, South Pass and Honey Lake wagon road. The... document contains two lists comprising the names, residences, and destination of 636 emigrants who recommend travel over the Lander cut-off, between the Sweetwater River and Fort Hall, in order to avoid many of the difficulties of the South Pass and Salt Lake routes."
