Title: Western Federation of Miners Traveling Card for a member of the Tuolumne Miner's Union
Author: ** Description: Printed form filled out in ink, with decorative border. 13.5x19.5 cm. (5¼x7¾").Rare traveling card certifying Tho. McNamera was a member in good standing of the Tuolumne Miner's Union, and due "the kind consideration of workingmen everywhere; he is entitled to sick and funeral benefits..." The sick benefits were $7 a week after the first week, for a total of 10 weeks maximum, and $70 as funeral benefits in case of death. Have pick, will travel, and if something goes wrong, not to worry. This is card No. 13, a low number indicating early enrollment in the organization. The Western Federation of Miners was organized on May 15, 1893. Scarce ephemera relating not only to mining but to the early history of the labor movement. Signed by E.S. Frisk as president, and Henry D. French as financial secretary, but not signed by McNamera in the space provided.
