Title: Manning & Co. Coffee Roasters 1519 Public Market

(12¼x16¾"), framed under glass.The first, flagship store of the West Coast chain of Manning's cafeteria-style restaurants, located at Seattle's Pike Place Market. Shown is the roasting machine, coffee for sale in bulk of by the cup (20 to 33 cents a pound, small cup 2 cents, large cup 4 cents), with several customers. The storefront was demolished in 1957, replaced by Lowell's Restaurant. Before there was Starbuck's there was Manning & Co. Manning's Coffee was founded in Seattle in 1908, starting as coffee at Pike's Place, expanding to food. In 1923 they expanded to San Francisco, then to Palo Alto. The headquarters of Manning's, Inc. was on Battery St. At it's height the company had 40 cafeterias and restaurants in 9 western states, in addition to coffee and frozen food distribution. In 1970 Manning's was sold to LaBatt of Canada, and subsequently to Del Monte. In addition to the coffee and bakery goods, and cafeterias, they ran food service operations in various hospitals and businesses. The last cafeteria, on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco, closed in 1984.
