Admiral Sir Sidney Smith's copy, engraved double-page title and 79 maps and charts, most double-page, some folding, short repaired tear to map of Marseille, occasional spotting, a few small stains, final plan with some marginal soiling and water-staining, but generally in clean condition, 20th century buckram-backed marbled boards, faded, 4to, Paris, 1746. Admiral Sidney Smith fought in the American Revolutionary War when a young officer; seeing action against the American frigate Raleigh in 1778. In 1780 his bravery during action near Cape St. Vincent led to his appointment to lieutenant of the 74-gun Alcide, despite being under the required age of nineteen. The following year he distinguished himself under Admiral Thomas Graves at the Battle of Chesapeake and under Admiral George Rodney at the Battle of Saintes and in consequence was given his first command - the sloop of war Fury.
