O'Brien (William Smith, Irish nationalist and revolutionary, 1803-64).- (Henry St. John, Lord) The Works..., 5 vol., vol. III half-title only, vol. I traces of worm at head on front pastedowns and a few early ff., vol. V title creased, browned, engraved bookplates of William Smith O'Brien on front pastedowns and ink inscription: "Ew O'Brien Carhimoyle" on front free endpapers,, contemporary tree calf, corners a little bumped, slight rubbing, red and green gilt morocco labels on spines, 8vo, Dublin, P. Byrne, 1793 O'Brien was a leading member of the Young Irelanders and with others had founded the Irish Confederation in 1847. In 1848 he urged the founding of a National Guard and later that year decided on an armed rising. In July O'Brien and others clashed with forty-six policemen at the widow McCormack's cabbage garden at Balingarry, Co. Tipperary and he was arrested. Later he was convicted and sentenced to transportation to Tasmania.
