Hughes (Ted).- Gammage 6
(Nick, editor) The Epic Poise: A Celebration of Ted Hughes, first edition, the editor's copy with his signature, also signed and inscribed by Seamus Heaney (one of the contributors) "For Nick Gammage with great regard - and in memory of Ted, Seamus Heaney" on title, illustrations, original pictorial wrappers, 1999; together with archive relating to the production of the book, namely correspondence with the contributors and the publishers, the contributions, proofs, reviews etc., loosely inserted in transparent sleeves in 5 ring-binder files, 1997-99, 8vo & 4to (6) Contributors include Al Alvarez, Leonard Baskin, Melvyn Bragg, Raymond Briggs (with 1p. MS of Ug), Peter Brook, Wendy Cope, D.J.Enright, Ruth Fainlight, John Fowles, John Gielgud, Fay Goodwin, Thom Gunn, Seamus Heaney, Susan Hill, Olwyn Hughes, Roger McGough, Andrew Motion, Tom Paulin, Kathleen Raine, Keith Sagar, Alan Sillitoe, Stephen Tabor and others; with poems written specially for Hughes by Charles Causley, Gillian Clarke, Roy Davids, Medbh McGuckian, W.S.Merwin, Adrian Mitchell, Paul Muldoon, Les Murray, William Scammell and Charles Tomlinson.

***Originally intended to celebrate Hughes's 70th birthday, but after the poet's sudden death in 1998 it became a memorial tribute. " At the time of his death , many of the essays for this book had been finished, and more were near completion. Ted had seen a number of these and was deeply moved. They were, as they were meant to be, intensely personal responses to his work full of incisive insight and enjoyment. Many contributors stuck closely to the brief of choosing a favourite poem or book, others ranged more widely, and some chose to write a new poem for him - about him. There was an overwhelming feeling among them that, although the book could no longer be the birthday gift for which it was intended, it should go ahead with its complimentary purpose: a celebration of Ted Hughes's achievement. Most decided to let their original piece stand. Others modified a little to reflect the impact of his loss." Nick Gammage, Introduction..
