(Sir Arthur Conan) The Sign of Four, offprint from 'Lippincott's Monthly Magazine' vol.45, pp.147-223 plus pp.224-292 (of 308) of other contents and pp.i-viii of 'With the Wits', no advertisements, frontispiece by Herbert Denman (very light staining to lower edge), later blue morocco-backed cloth, t.e.g., a little rubbed, [Green & Gibson A7i; De Waal 270], 8vo, Philadelphia, J.Lippincott, February 1890.

***This is the first appearance of The Sign of the Four, published by Lippincott's in both London and Philadelphia at approximately the same time. The American issue has a special printed title opposite the frontispiece, which has led to some maintaining that it is the true first edition..
