Morpurgo (Michael) War Horse

Sign In to see what this sold for

Morpurgo (Michael) War Horse,
first edition, contemporary ink inscription "...a touching story of a rather special horse, made even more touching in that it's true..." on front free endpaper, one leaf creased across upper outer corner, original glazed pictorial boards, price crossed out on rear board, spine a little browned, 8vo, Kingswood, 1982.

***First edition of the children's story which has achieved worldwide renown through the remarkable stage adaptation using puppetry, and more recently with Steven Spielberg's cinema version. The inscription refers to it being a true story, in fact the Author's Note at the beginning describing the "small dusty painting of a horse" hanging in the village hall was a fabrication by Morpurgo, and many visitors to the village of Iddesleigh in Devon went away disappointed. However, in November last year, a specially-commissioned painting was hung, in anticipation of visitors following the opening of the film..
