Surrealism.- International Surrealist Exhibition (The), Thursday, June 11th to Saturday, July 4th, 1936, New Burlington Galleries..., introduction by Herbert Read, printed on pale blue-green paper, flyer for the series of lectures loosely inserted, original pictorial pink wrappers featuring a surrealist version of the Apollo Belvedere by Max Ernst on upper cover, stapled, a little soiled and faded, particularly spine, 8vo, 1936. ***Catalogue of the first international surrealist exhibition organized by Roland Penrose, Herbert Read, André Breton, Paul Eluard, Man Ray, E.L.T.Mesens, Salvador Dali and others, most of whom also contributed to the exhibition. It was opened by Breton, attended by several thousand during its run and included lectures by several of the contributors. "Dali's lecture was delivered whilst wearing a deep-sea diving suit. Nearly suffocating during the presentation, Dali had to be rescued by the young poet David Gascoyne, who arrived with a spanner to release him from the diving helmet." Wikipedia.
