Catalogue Reference: "Life and Works of Thomas Sully", by Biddle and Fielding, Entry 1083 (pg. 211). Note: Accompanied by original period frame. Provenance: Descended through family of Mrs. Lewis of Woodbury, New Jersey to Mr. Charles Camp Cotton. Purchased from Mr. Cotton in 1970 by Mrs. Barbara E. Snape of Haddonfield, New Jersey for "the sum of $1" (original notarized letter of this transaction on file).
Condition reportGood. Old relining. Very minor craquelure throughout. Under black light, several areas of inpainting; upper right corner, figure's face (forehead, right side of nose, and under each eye), under figure's chin/neck area, both sides of figure's white wrap, figure's right forearm, and lower center below figure's right hand. Please note that these areas are only noticeable under black light and the painting has been professionally restored/conserved with the utmost care.
