FLETCHER MARTIN AMERICAN 1904-1979 O/C BOY W CAT Signed Top Left Very Good Condition Measures Approximately 18-1/2 Inches Long 31 Inches Wide Plus Original Frame Martin was born in 1904 in Palisade, Colorado. His artist's skills were largely self-taught. Found employment in a printshop where his boss recognized and nurtured his artistry. Coming to the attention of the Federal Arts Project, he Started Teaching art, and did so at University of Florida, State University of Iowa, the University of Minnesota, San Antonio Art Institute, and Washington State University. He served as a war correspondent for Life magazine during World War II. And now millions of Americans now knew who Fletcher Martin was. In that sense, Martin had bridged the divide between fine and commercial art. He was the recipient of the Walter Lippencott Prize in 1947 and the Benjamin Altman Prize in 1949. His works can be found in the collections of Abbott Laboratories, Brandeis University, the Cranbrook Institute, the Denver Art Museum, and the Library of Congress.
