The night of April6, 1888, near Rockingham, the Night Express, up from Bellows Falls and pulled by engine No. 21, Nathan Rice, hit a section of roadbed softened by a plugged culvert and the spring runoff. The engine was wrecked, its crew was killed the baggage car burned and the coach overturned. Miraculously the sleeper remained on the rails, unruffled and unharmed.
