Janine Wesselmann, "Gardens, Giverny"

Janine Wesselmann (Am. b. 1947), framed oil on canvas of flowers in bloom before a French chateau. Signed lower right. Legend on back "Gardens, Giverny 3600". 34" high, 34" wide; sight size: 23 1/4" high, 23 1/4" wide. Janine Wesselmann is known for her impressionist style and for her parodies of European and American social life, while remaining true to the impressionist genre. She is the first American woman to be accepted into the Collection 'd Art Modern de la ville de Paris, France. She earned a BS degree from Cornell University in 1969. Later, she studied portraiture in Europe. She was the first American to show at the Exposition du Printemps, France, and the Centro Culturale, Rome.
