Clare Veronica Hope Leighton (Eng./Am. 1898 - 1989), framed original woodblock engraving of tobacco field workers, titled "Tobacco" and marked "17/50". Actual size 11" high, 10 1/2" wide. Foxing, waterstains and fraying, tears at edges. Clare Leighton enjoyed a prolific career. Born in England, Leighton emigrated to the United States in 1939, and after extended stays in Baltimore and North Carolina, she settled in Woodbury, Connecticut in 1951. She died November 4, 1989 and her ashes are buried in a cemetery in Waterbury, Connecticut. The Georgia Museum of Art very recently hosted an exhibition of her works. In 1952, Wedgwood commissioned a series of 12 wood engravings by Leighton. These engravings were meant to represent the traditional industries for which New England was famous, including Whaling (Massachusetts, especially Nantucket), Marble Quarrying (a Vermont specialty), Lobstering (associated with Maine), Tobacco Growing (Connecticut), Maple Sugaring (Vermont and New Hampshire), Cranberrying (Massachusetts), as well as a variety of traditional activities found in
