Originally from the Netherlands, Berns moved to North Carolina in the mid-1960s to teach at UNC-Greensboro. Berns' exquisitely detailed traditional landscapes are housed in numerous museum collections including the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian, The High Museum, and many others.
