A VERY RARE REVERSIBLE CAUCASIAN KINDJAL DAGGER

The obverse composed of elaborately filigreed and gilded silver with nielloed borders, the reverse of finely chiseled silver, parcel gilded and nielloed overall in flowering vine motifs. With reversible suspension band which allows it to be worn with either face showing. Straight, double-edged blade with single offset fuller to either side and acute tip. Latter 19th century. In the Caucasus, the importance of the kindjal extended far beyond that of a weapon. It was a prime indicator of personal prestige as well, and thus it provided the smith with almost boundless scope for mechanical as well as artistic innovation. Overall length 46.2 cm length.
