Made at Epiros, the silver handle with traces of gilding embossed in spiral flutes with bands of foliage interspersed. On the pommel an excellent Classical-style relief of Herakles with head upturned, holding the Kitherion olive club and Nemean Lion Skin. The straight, single-edged, handforged blade of laminar construction.In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with silver mounts.First quarter of the 19th century.Said to have come from Heraclea Trachinia, by tradition the resting place of Herakles; a colony was founded by the Spartans during the Peloponnesian Wars. Heraclea Trachinia was also an important center of resistance during the War of Independence. Overall length 34.5 cm. Condition II
