The hilt with high shoulders characteristic of the period, finely carved in Celtic interlace motifs and set with silver studs, the disk pommel mounted in silver with roped border and bead finial, the flared silver ferrule with engraved borders. The massive single-edged blade with substantial back fuller to either side and long false edge, etched with flowers and a crown surmounting a thistle, with substantial remains of bluing and gilding in the fullers. In its original black leather scabbard with four silver mounts engraved en suite with those of the hilt, the chape further engraved with a thistle. Third quarter of the 18th century. Light wear, areas of pitting to blade, implements lacking. Examples of this period are very seldom encountered. See James D.
