A RARE BEKTASI YATAGHAN SWORD

With organic grip, the pommel carved as a Bektasi Dervish’s fourfold turban. The ferrule, large, profiled reinforces and spine of silver, finely decorated with niello and gilding. The broad, hollowground blade struck with an apple-shaped maker’s mark signed ‘ALI (?) Late 18th century.Stable crack to grip. The Bektasis acted as spiritual leaders to the Janissaries and also fought beside them in battle. Overall length 77.6 cm. Condition II
