A high quality example in fine condition, the hilt with faceted steel pommel cap and antler grips, the tangbands heavily gilt, the guard forged of dramatically-patterned Persian black wootz with fine gold inlay work. The broad, massive blade forged of the finest Persian Kara Taban or Brilliant Black wootz in a superbly-detailed and highly-contrasted Ladder Pattern retaining all of its original finish. The right forte bears two chiseled cartouches, the upper containing the name and titles of Shah Abbas I of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE- YE VILAYET (r. 1588-1629) and the lower the signature, WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH 1[00]8 (1599/1600 c.e.)End of the 16th-beginning of the 17th century. Light wear to gilding on hilt. Overall length 99.8 cm. Condition I
