A FINE SAFAVID SHAMSHIR SWORD

A superior example, the pommel chiseled with a polygonal cartouche containing a falcon, the guard finely wrought of black wootz and chiseled en suite with a hunting bird on either side, the tangbands with heavy gold vinework inlay and elephant grips with braided silvered wire wrap to base. The massive blade of shallow curvature, single-edged and double-fullered along the spine, and elegantly chiseled at the forte on each side with budding palmettes. With three cartouches to the right forte; the first inscribed with the name and titles of Shah Abbas of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET (r. 1588-1629) and the second with WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH, both in a very fine hand. The third encloses the shirvekhorshid or lion and sun emblem of Iran, with the name ASSAD inscribed upon the lion as well. Forged of superior Kara Taban Brilliant Black Persian wootz damascus steel in a fine and dramatic Ladder Pattern. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with chiseled suspension bands en suite with those of the hilt, and engraved brass chape. Early 17th century.Overall length 100.8 cm. Condition I
