Very seldom encountered, comprising a chanfron and two panels of barding which protect the horse quite completely, each covered in hundreds of steel lamellar plates with profiled edges, the pierced steel borders flanked by applied steel flower and leaf plates. Mounted on leather backed by thickly-padded fabric with green, red and gold velvet piping. The chanfron in the form of an elephant’s head studded with flower and leaf plates en suite with the barding, as well as pair of applied steel tusks; the ears folding back to protect the sides of the horse’s head, while the trunk, covered in lamellar plates, protects the muzzle. Mid-19th century.Minor losses and wear. Complete horse armors are extremely rare. Overall length of panel 198 cm. Condition I
